New parents usually find out they have a lot to learn as soon as their blessing baby arrives on the scene. For us, that was especially true. I mean, Summer Elizabeth was born to a mama who’d never ever held a child under 2 years old, let alone change a diaper. Now you see why my kid-magnet husband is so important, right? Anyway, one of the first obstacles we encountered with a newborn was that tiny babies scratch themselves; not a little, not occasionally, but a whole lot.
Many moms choose mittens to keep baby’s self-scratching paper thin nails from becoming a nuisance. I’m not that mom. When my well-meaning mother-in-law gifted us a few sets of mini mittens, I guffawed and folded them into baby’s drawer. Once Summer was on the scene with her first facial mars, courtesy of her own teensy tiny fingernails, I realized the joke was on me. We tried mittens, but she never kept them on.
Our solution to combating newborn scratches: baby socks.
Cotton baby socks make perfect scratch guards for baby’s fingernails. They’ve even got the added benefit of keeping their delicate hands warm. Baby socks have a length of loose elastic running through the ankle that help to keep them on much better than any newborn mittens we tried. Sure, your infant might look a little silly wearing socks on his hands, but what’s really important, appearances or keeping scratches at bay?

Such a cute baby!!!! I was so embarrassed when my first child had scratches! I remember wanting to stay away from family thinking that they would think that i was a bad mom! After 5…now I just trim the nails after seeing a scratch and move on! This post was a reminder though about the “little things” we take for granted…I remember trimming each one’s nails! Silly but makes me sad now that they are getting older! (oldest is nine- youngest is 9 months so not that old!) I am hosting tomorrow at http://www.frugalfitfamily.com and the link is up! Swing by if you can!

Thanks for visiting, Heather May. My little girl had scratched cheeks almost all the time until she was about 7 months old, so we got used to it. Once she was big enough to take the socks off, even with trimmed nails she managed to scratch herself. I guess that’s just one of the stages of life that most kids go through. Enjoy your family this week! 9 months is such a great age!

when my kids were babies that’s what i resorted to also. the mittens always fell off, but the socks managed to stay on longer to prevent scratching their little face.

Apparently, from all the sweet comments I’ve received today, the sock technique is pretty popular. Thanks so much for taking the time to visit & comment, Leah!
