A few months ago I shared about our experience using the elimination communication method with our baby. She’s nearly a year old now, and still going strong. In fact, we’re right in the middle of potty training this week and you can learn how to potty train early here.If you’re just starting elimination communication with your child, know that you don’t really need to go out and buy anything you don’t already have on hand. That being said, using elimination communication with your baby goes more smoothly and changes of clothing are made more efficient and quick when you choose an ideal wardrobe for EC (elimination communication).
Today I’m sharing the ideal wardrobe for baby when using elimination communication in infancy. These are the ideal pieces of clothing that make EC a low-stress and totally manageable (dare I say enjoyable?) experience for parents and baby.
DIY Babylegs from Ordinary Miracles
Baby Leg Warmers
Baby leg warmers, a.k.a. babylegs are my favorite way to keep baby’s legs cozy and warm when we’re ECing. When my first child was a baby I knitted a pair, but these days, with three kids under 4, this mama’s strapped for time.
I love this no-sew DIY babylegs method but if you’re more crafty try this chic DIY babylegs tutorial. No time for DIY? Check out this site’s colorful selection of baby leg warmers. P.S. Little girls long potty-trained also love wearing these with skirts and dresses!
Tops
Tees or Thermal Tops
Depending on the weather where you live, tee shirts or long-sleeved thermal tops are perfect for baby to wear as he learns EC. They’ll keep his core warm and save you the hassle of unfastening any snaps when taking baby to the loo. Onesies are not EC friendly.
Newborn Gowns
If you’re starting elimination communication with a newborn, infant gowns are a great way to dress your baby. They’ll keep him or her nice and warm and make potty visits a snap too! Love this design from Lola and Darla.
Dresses
Dresses are the perfect option for your baby girl. They cover her up and make diaper changes a snap when paired with knee-high baby socks or baby leg warmers.
Socks
Keep baby’s wee little toes toasty and warm by keeping snug socks on him for EC. If you are concerned that they’ll get wet in pee pee puddles in the beginning, stock up! Loving these warm fuzzies from Hanna Anderson.
Extra Layers of Warmth
Seasonally, you might consider addinga additional layer to baby’s EC outfit to keep him warm. My favorite is a fleece vest like the one pictured above though a basic tee worn under clothing or even a knit sweater or jacket work well.
Baby clothes to avoid with EC:
Onesies
Babies look adorable in onesies, but the snaps at the crotch just take too much time unfastening when baby has an urgent need to use the toilet. Sticking with simple tops and tees without any long flaps to fasten at diaper changes makes EC easier.
Pants
Yes, this might seem absurd, and pants are certainly warranted in public places and at social gatherings, but families working on EC will find that it’s much easier to spot a “miss” and much faster to transfer baby to the toilet if your child is wearing babylegs rather than shorts or pants. When at home, opt for babylegs. If it’s warm, you might not need anything on baby’s legs at all.
Hope this helps make your EC experience simple and manageable!
Cheers,

SILLY QUESTION BUT WHAT IS ELIMINATION COMMUNICATION?
Jelli says
Not a silly question at all. EC is simply a term used when parents and babies work together to catch the signals of when baby needs to use the bathroom.
