She waited eagerly underfoot sporting her favorite reversible kiddo apron. The one with the heart pocket lovingly stitched onto the front. Hopping excitedly from one foot to the other she chimed little girl songs about afternoons spent forming playdough masterpieces. Cookies were her fave. Chocolate chip, to be exact.
Cookies painstakingly molded from her favorite stovetop playdough recipe. Her two year-old chubby fingers produced cookies from miniscule marble size to enormous pancake-like formations studded with colored “chocolate chips” and stacked high on a neon pink IKEA plate designated for our playdough adventures.
“Cookies, who wants cookies?” she’d shout in a mini singsong voice. I’d wave my hands anxiously wearing the biggest, proudest mama grin for my tiny playdough pastry chef as she beamed and clumsily sat the colorful plate before me.
“Eat them!”
I obliged.
For years now, (4 to be exact), I’ve been making homemade play dough from this simple playdough recipe. We’ve used all kinds of food colorings with it, from gels to liquid drops. We’ve scented it with essential oils, cinnamon, and spices from the pantry, and even tasted it a time or two when I was pouring over a book rather than supervising.
Last year we tried apple pie spice playdough by stirring in cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves into the playdough mixture. The kids loved that sensory experience even though it was tempting to taste.
This year I’d like to share a handful of creative fall scented playdough recipes that you and your family will surely enjoy this season and beyond.
