I grew up in a land of cold winters. Harsh, snowy conditions and high wind chill are a terrific combo for conjuring up rough, hacking coughs. Not a desirable scenario, but manageable, even without a doctor visit in many cases.
I was in no way compensated for this post, though it does contain affiliate links. I just plain love the product.
An older gentleman neighbor introduced my family to Fisherman’s Friend, an over-the-counter cough drop created in 1865 for English fisherman. The original menthol and eucalyptus lozenge is strong enough to numb your taste buds as it soothes a sore throat and suppresses coughing.
If you’re looking for a more palatable option, though I do highly recommend the originals, try cherry or extra strong mint. Husband and I pick these up at the supermarket every time we get a cough & can’t recommend them highly enough.
My mother loves them so much that when she visited in September she bought a few bags of her own to take home. Fisherman’s Friend are sold in drug stores, supermarkets and online. Apparently they’re even a hit here in the tropics, since the grocery store keeps them in stock, much to my delight.

Thanks for this endorsement, Jelli! I’ve seen this product countless of times but have never bought it. Remarkably, none of the kids have gotten sick this year (a first for us!) but I might just pick up a couple of containers for “just in case.” 🙂

Jillian, these things are amazing, but I wouldn’t stock up. Once the package is opened, you have to keep it in a ziplock bag to keep moisture out or they’ll get funky after a few months. One bag should do the trick for quite some time. Thanks for visiting and congrats for staying healthy! I’m so glad we don’t have to combat cold winters here. Since living in the tropics I get sick much less often.
