I celebrate Mother’s Day twice a year. Being an expat, I feel entitled to celebrate Mother’s Day with all my U.S. friends, and living in Costa Rica, you’d better believe I welcome the opportunity to be spoiled a second time in August.
This year, we celebrated in May eating breakfast at one of my favorite Costa Rican typical restaurants. I ate the standard Tico breakfast fare, gallo pinto, while Husband surprised me by ordering a burger. Who eats burgers before 8 a.m.? I was informed that this Mother’s Day was courtesy of Summer Elizabeth.
Ticos do Mother’s Day big. Shops are closed, people have the day off work, and extended families gather together to celebrate mom, grandma, great-aunts…you get the gist. I love that about Costa Ricans; family is the heart of everything. It’s a cultural gem that I caught onto real fast as a study abroad student in 2006, where I was blessed with a genuinely wonderful Tico host family. Sometimes it’s a real pain when you invite someone to dinner and they show up with extended family in tow, but all in all, it’s a very good thing.
On August 15th we celebrated Tico Mother’s Day, sponsored by baby Elijah. The meal: crazy good Italian fare just minutes from home. Me- seafood pasta. Husband- pizza. Summerbeth- bites from both plates plus some leftover pasta I sneaked in just in case we didn’t order toddler friendly or healthy dishes. My big gift: a vacuum cleaner. And yes, I really did want it.

I love how each child can “sponsor” a Mother’s Day! Too cute!
Jelli says
Thanks, Blair. I suppose I should find another country to live in where Mother’s Day is celebrated at another date, have a 3rd kid, and celebrate 3x, right? Sounds good to me 😉

oh sweet glorious vacuum cleaner!!! I missed mine so much when we were in language school!!! And then when my mom and dad came in April they brought mine from the States!!! I was soooo excited! So happy for you!
Jelli says
I’d never even given the vac a thought since we have tile floors, but recently bought an area rug that gets filthy unless we vacuum, and we’d been procrastinating on borrowing vacs from friends, so it was high time to get our own. The only bummer is that the vac works great (it’s from EPA) but the carpet attachment tool cuts the suction power in half. Still looking for a replacement for that, but at least it works!!

So nice you get to celebrate twice. As it should be, since sometimes moms do at least twice the parenting! Here in Brazil it is the opposite though; we celebrate Mother’s Day the same as in North America, but Father’s Day is celebrated in August here (and June there).

Thankfully, we’re in a situation where both my husband and I spend a lot of time at home, so he gets to help out with the kids a whole bunch more than many dads. In fact, just yesterday I was reminded by a friend of just how spoiled I am to have my husband around so much. It’s fantastic & I’m so so grateful for the opportunity to work together both at “work” and parenting. Hope your husband lives it up on his 2 celebratory days!! Thanks for visiting again, Taara!

Every day should be mother’s day :)!!! Congrats on your second bundle of joy…and agreed, who eats burgers at 8 AM – lol!!! Wait – my bff when she’s eating no carbs….
Glad you had a great time….have a lovely weekend, ~ jodie
Jelli says
Haha, you’re right, the low-carb diets do call for lots of protein, don’t they? I think at 8 a.m. I’d opt for eggs 😉 Thanks for visiting and joining us again this week, Jodie. I appreciate your loyalty to the linkup.
