Our house was full of toddler energy last week, two one-year olds curious as can be, exploring their world and playing together…when they weren’t snoozing.
We babysat Summer’s little friend. His mama packed him lunch, including mandarin oranges, which I’d never given Summerbeth.
I was curious about giving her an orange, concerned about seeds and choking, when I came up with this idea. Use kitchen scissors to halve mandarin orange or small tangerine sections to easily remove seeds and make the pieces bite-sized and easier to handle for little fingers. Scissors work much better than knives for this job, and get it done fast. Yes, feeding babies mandarin oranges is juicy and messy, but they love it, and I love giving my littles a vitamin C boost as a snack every day. Works for me!

That is genius! My son loves tangerines but I never quite know how to get the seeds out. Thanks for hosting!
You’re so welcome! Glad you could join us Melanie. Here’s hoping your son gets many more citrus fruits now!
Awesome idea and thanks for hosting again!! 🙂
Great tip! I usually use my teeth because I’m a little bit lazy 🙂 Thanks for hosting!
I’ve definitely tried using my teeth and a paring knife. Trust me, those scissors are a gem for the job!
Wonderful idea! I do this for J, she loves citrus fruits!
That’s absolutely brilliant!!
Kitchen scissors are so awesome–and that is a great use for a pair :).
I do love my scissors. I mainly use them to trim fat off meats and to clip herbs, but boy they do come in handy for many an odd job!
I really wanted to Lucas to get into oranges – so I just kept eating them every day for a while and he soon wanted to try them. I peel them and the split them in half as well. And it’s not usually too messy. 🙂
Summer got interested in mandarin oranges the same way…watching me eat them. I have been buying huge bags at the farmer’s market while they’re in season, bags so big I have to eat about 2/day to keep up. She liked the color and was intrigued.
Hi Jelli, thanks so much for the reminder! I hope my Mommy post doesn’t turn too many people off, but it is a true moment of momhood (hurray!!) 😀
Thanks for joining us, Roshni. Haven’t read your post yet, but I’m sure somebody will appreciate it. Always fun to visit your site.
