My Take on Biblical Living

August 9, 2012 By Jelli 11 Comments

We know that Jesus called us make disciples of all nations in Matthew 28:19, but are we ourselves living as His disciples? Think about it; in the Old Testament times and even into Jesus’ day, Rabbis were followed around by young scholars, rabbis-in-the-making, if you will…disciples. These boys wanted what the Rabbi had. They wanted to know what he knew, to live as he lived, to teach as he taught.

Newsflash: Jesus is THEE rabbi. He wants you trailing his every move, speaking his words, imparting his grace, living selflessly to glorify His father, our father who art in Heaven, amen.

How can we be Jesus’ disciples in this crazy fallen world? Live Biblically. Shrug off religion,  say “tata” to superficiality & selfishness, and get into the Word. Living Biblically can be summed up in 5 words:

——————>>Read and Live the Bible<<------------------

Sounds simple, and it can be. Living Biblically requires time set aside for you and your maker every day.  To live Biblically you have to know what the Bible says. It requires a conscious decision to live your life to glorify God in absolutely everything. Finances? Yep. Family matter? Yep. Fashion choices? Um, yeah, that too. There is not a single area of your life that He doesn’t want to be included in.

Since I’m a list-lover, here are my suggestions for how to start (and continue!) living Biblically:

Read God’s Word Daily Even if you’ve only got 2 minutes, get into the Word. My husband has a repulsive ingenious habit of keeping his Bible on the back of the toilet to read during opportune moments. I try not to touch it if I can help it, but greatly applaud his innovative ways of finding time to read Scripture.

Memorize Scripture As if you didn’t see this one coming, right? Don’t be intimidated by others who can spout a sermon filled with all kinds of Bible references without a second thought. You can get there too. It just takes determination. If you’re competitive, make it a family game to see who can memorize a passage first or try a sticker chart. Take baby steps. You’ll get there!

Pray on Priorities Would God approve your daily schedule? Would He recognize you as Jesus’ disciple or a masquerader dressing up pretty on Sunday mornings based on how you spend your time and $ ? Take some time to “be faithful in prayer” Rom. 12:12 and ask the Lord to help you realign your priorities. He’d be more than happy to guide you.

Ask “Why?” Why am I….Take some serious time to consider what your life reflects about God.  Why do you fix meals the way you do? Why do you treat your family as you do? Choose heels instead of loafers?  Watch your favorite TV programs every night? Every aspect of our lives should shine brightly for Him. Sure, my own life still isn’t a glittering example, but it is my goal.  I’m running that race beside you, stumbling as I go along, but moving toward the prize, as the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians.  At our wedding my hottie husband and I washed one another’s feet during the ceremony to the melodies of Casting Crown’s “Lifesong.” I crouched low and yanked down his socks tearing my dress in the process, elated to marry a man who wanted his, and ultimately our family’s lifesong to align with Christ.

Ditch Pride Be selfless. Don’t be ME-based, but HE-based. Basking in God’s words and asking the Holy Spirit for strength, you can attain humility. Just be warned, sometimes it hurts getting humble.

Show the Love Jesus said it best. Check out Matthew 22:37-39

Wow. Great post! I can totally relate to the humbling process not being so glamorous or easy! haha I hate it! Thank you for this great reminder to follow Jesus. I was just joking with some of my youth kids about being a stalker for Jesus. It was quite the conversation. hehe
