As my husband and I had dinner with friends the other night, I learned these two very unconventional, but incredibly practical uses for tampons. Keep in mind that our friend who shared the info is an incredibly studied biologist who led groups all over Costa Rica for >20 years as an expert tour guide. This guy knows his stuff! As soon as I heard the info, I just knew it would be an unusual, but helpful blog post, so here goes!
1. Tampons are an excellent alternative to traditional kindling to start fires. If you’re ever in the woods surrounded by damp brush and twigs that just won’t light, grab a handy Tampax and watch your campfire ignite.
2. Tampons are an effective alternative to cotton bandages to stop/absorb bleeding wounds. They’re clean, compact, and work well when pressed against a bleeding wound and wrapped with bandaging tape.
Bottom Line: Keep tampons in your first aid kit. You never know when they might come in handy!

I had to read this post just based on the title!! Hopefully i never need to use a tampon in any other situation than what it’s intended for, but good to know.

haha so, I have this guy friend who gets horrible nose bleeds and one time we were all traveling when he got one. He asked me to buy him a box of tampons at the gas station. After I did (thinking what in the world) he took one and stuffed it up his nose! Apparently, he carried them in his truck at all times for such emergencies. No shame I tell ya.

So funny! I love the tip about using tampons to start fires.
While traveling abroad, my mom once used a maxi pad on a nasty cut when a bandage wasn’t available. She said it worked well. It has the advantage over the tampon in that it’s self adhesive too, but I suppose in these situations one just uses whatever is available.

So funny, we were just talking about fact #1 on our last camping trip! And then last week on the radio, the DJ was talking about how cardboard tampon applicators are the perfect size for building model rocket engines… I passed that tip right along to my husband!

Tampons are NOT STERILE, and in fact earlier this year a woman found a moldy tampon in a new box! A tampon wouldn’t be any more dangerous on/in a wound than, say, your T-shirt or a dish towel, but it’s NOT as safe as a sterile bandage.
I never heard of using them to start fires. Great idea!
Jelli says
Thanks for letting me know! I’m guessing I’m not the only one who sort of assumed that they were sterile. I appreciate you stopping by, Becca.

The question is: would chuck norris use a tampon to stop his bleeding? or does he even bleed?? haha

Hmmm to start a fire? I’m intrigued! I guess I’ll be carrying tampons around more often.

Bwahah that is awesome! I don’t use tampons but I may need to pick a box up to keep in the first aid kit and for when we go camping. 😉

Tampon fire starters? Perfect since they are shaped like a stick of TNT with a fuse and everything! 😀

I’m going to have to keep the fire starting tip in mind. I would have never thought about that…
