Gobs of dreamy, fluffy, peanut butter frosting make any cupcake sing yodel, it’s that good. It’s my absolute favorite frosting recipe, hands down, and if you’ve ever tried my chocolate cupcakes recipe, you’ve already been introduced.Since summer is in full-swing, time is of the essence. It’s the seize-the-day season, and you’ve got a full-schedule of Little League games, pool dates, and walks in the part to fit in, so I’ll cut to the chase.
If you like peanut butter, you’ve just met your go-to easy peanut butter frosting recipe. As in, you’ll never need another frosting recipe again.
Baking strawberry cupcakes? Pipe some beautiful peanut butter frosting spirals on top and call them peanut butter and jelly cupcakes. You’re so clever!
Bake the best vegan chocolate cupcakes and dollop on peanut butter frosting, add a Reese Cup garnish, and voila: Reese Cupcakes. See, you’re getting the hang of this!
Spread a heavy-handed “hat” of peanut butter frosting on graham crackers, top with toasted marshmallows, a Hershey bar, and the final graham, and wowzers, you’ve just made s’mores history!
So many options! And still I’m in heaven just licking the beaters.
Here goes!
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- 5 tablespoons butter, at room temperature
- ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅔ cup heavy cream (can be chilled or at room temperature)
- Optional toppings: chooped peanuts, colored jimmies, Reese Cups, malted milk balls, dried banana chips
- Combine powdered sugar, peanut butter, butter, vanilla, and salt and whip until smooth and light, about 2 -3 minutes.
- Add cream and whip on high until fluffy, about 2 minutes more. Pipe onto cupcakes. (Here's the decorating tip and decorating bags I used.)
- * If frosting seems too soft to pipe, spoon it into your decorating bag and pop it into the refrigerator for 20 minutes to firm up.
- Frosted cupcake may be stored at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Notes:
- If frosting is too soft for piping, refrigerate it 20 minutes until it stiffens a bit.
- This frosting recipe makes enough to top 24 cupcakes
- I used these Wilton decorating bags
- This is the piping tip I used.

I love cupcakes. I love light, fluffy frosting…LOL a win all around! Do you think this would work with almond or cashew butters? Have to admit I am not so big on peanut butter, but I do love nuts and think it would be so great for the peanut butter and jelly cupcake you mentioned!
Jelli says
Heather, I’ve never tried this with almond butter and to be honest, I’ve only tried almond butter once. (It just came to Costa Rican stores.) The consistency of the almond butter they sell here (Kirkland’s) is really thick and tar-like and it might keep the frosting from being fluffy and beautiful. It’s definitely worth a try though. Let me know if you try it!

Though I absolutely love peanut butter I have never actually tired peanut butter frosting before. I bet it is finger licking deliciously.

This looks so good! I love peanut butter and I always buy the whipped kind, so I am happy to know you can make it into icing on top of my other favorite thing chocolate cupcakes.
Tami says
I would’ve never thought to use strawberry anything for the “jelly” part of a pb&j treat. This is too cute and I’m sure my little guy will enjoy the taste as much as I enjoy making them for me. I might even let him help make the mess!
Jelli says
Haha, having kids cook with you is so much fun, and you’re right- totally messy! Just yesterday I tried to introduce my 4 year-old to knife basics. We didn’t get much actually chopped, but she enjoyed the lesson. Hope you and your little guy try the frosting soon. You’ll be back for more!

On top of a cookie?!! Great idea, Winter. I’d love to make some chocolate chip cookie sandwiches with this. You’ll probably see that in a future blog post. Take care and stop by again soon.

Yay! I love a good peanut butter frosting. My sister is a baker and she makes it all the time. It’s so yummy! I’ll have to try your recipe because I can never get enough of peanut butter.
Jelli says
I think I’d have serious self-control issues if my sister were a baker- love sweets too much! Aly, I hope you enjoy the frosting as much as we did. Thanks so much for taking a second from your busy day to stop by.

Not only kids would like it even adults too especially Me! I love cupcakes and anything with peanut butter by just looking at your photo makes me want to have it right now. Sometimes it is nice to threat your self with sweet once in awhile , esp. after long week of workout and salad. I think we all deserve a tap in a back and a side of cupcake or ice cream.
