Sugar Cookies: revisited

September 22, 2009 By Jelli 2 Comments

Update: Yesterday I baked up a batch of Elle’s White Sugar Cookies recipe. The cookies, in comparison to my current favorites are crisper and thinner. They have a well-developed almond flavor and a  melt-in-your-mouth sweetness. For a crisp cookie, they’re fantastic (this coming from a soft-cookie girl). The stiff texture and crisp crust make these…

Sugar Cookies

September 18, 2009 By Jelli 3 Comments

I finally did it! I outlined. I flooded. I dotted, swirled, and traced.  A baby shower this weekend prompted sugar cookies with royal icing take #2; my 1st experience with the entire royal icing procedure. I’d used royal icing once before, but only in the stiff piping texture. While my  cookies look decent, I had…

There’s a new lemon cake in town

September 14, 2009 By Jelli 2 Comments

Last week my landlord requested a birthday cake for her soon-to-be 3 year-old son. The piñata was “Cars” themed, so in keeping with this, I headed to the cake shop and found a cute plastic printout of Lightening McQueen (I’d forewarned her that my decorating skills are still a work in progress, so as not…

Apple Pie Ice Cream

September 8, 2009 By Jelli 4 Comments

I love Blizzard’s, McFlurries, and Cold Stone Creations. It’s fun to pick out the yummy bits and pieces of the mix-ins and to play the artist putting together a culinary masterpiece. Except for one time at Cold Stone with my friend Amanda, who put together a horrific combination involving raspberries, gummy worms, and some kind…

EZ Peasy Lemon Cookies

September 4, 2009 By Jelli Leave a Comment

As a kid, my mom made these cookies quite frequently. I love how soft the centers are in comparison to the crispy crust. They’re just the right mix of sweet and tart, and wonderful to take to summer gatherings. Of all lemon cookies, these are in my top 2 recipes of all time. They just…

Great Grandma’s Soft Orange Cookies

August 21, 2009 By Jelli 29 Comments

Soft Orange Cookies A family heirloom recipe from Jellibean Journals

My Great Grandma was a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen. The women in my family had the bar set high. It took plenty of patience and practice on my mother’s part to even come close to my father’s grandmother’s cooking. Soft orange cookies are one of Great-Grandma Berndt’s heirloom recipes. They’re so…

Celebration (and cleanup) time!!

August 21, 2009 By Jelli 1 Comment

Today’s my birthday! Yay! Husband will be posting my bday dessert later, but in the meantime, I thought I’d share a bit of advice that I’ve accumulated over my 25 years… Sometimes Mom is right. Just sometimes though. Yesterday I baked 2 devils food cakes for a bday celebration at Husband’s workplace. These really were…

Sue Flay, Bobby’s mom?

August 11, 2009 By Jelli 2 Comments

Sue Flay- soufflé, get it? Can you tell I watch an overdose of Food Network? Inspired by Jamie at MyBakingAddiction, I went the way of the haughty taughty overpriced but elegant grown-up restaurants and made myself a chocolate orange soufflé for lunch. Its accompaniment, soy sloppy joes. Yes, laugh as you may. This is my…

Carmel Apple Turnovers

August 10, 2009 By Jelli Leave a Comment

Still trying to make the best use of my 5kilos of dulce de leche, today’s recipe is for messy gooey caramel apple turnovers. Flaky pie dough hugs a tender filling of 3 varieties of apples, sugar, spices, and dulce de leche. Though I’m not yet an expert at picture-perfect empanadas, tarts, or turnovers, let me…

Cuatro Leches

August 4, 2009 By Jelli 5 Comments

Yesterday I made a Tres Leches to send to work with Husband to sell. It was nicely soaked and looking so tasty that I couldn’t keep my fork out of it. This one stayed at home. A grocery trip and a few hours later Cuatro Leches was born, a prototype of my creation. Picture the…
