My Newborn Cloth Diaper Stash

October 12, 2013 By Jelli 6 Comments

It’s no secret I love cloth diapers. I’ve taught you how to save money on prefolds, choose & pack a cloth diaper bag, and how to deal with poopy diaper laundry. Today, it’s time to introduce you to my newborn cloth diaper stash.newborn-cloth-diaper-stash-purchaseBefore my first child was born, both my husband and I were sold on cloth diapers. I spent way too many hours on Diaper Swappers hunting down the best deals and purchasing a small stash of fluffy diapers.I made a bad judgement call with Summer Elizabeth, buying newborn sized prefolds. They lasted 2 months. That’s no good, folks! Luckily, I was able to resell them on the same website, even making a profit. This time around, I bought the next size up.They are still small enough to fit a newborn but even now at 2 months there’s no sign of growing out of them yet!newborn-cloth-diapers I’m a prefold diaper fan. Prefolds are the mainstay of my newborn cloth diapering arsenal. I love prefold diapers because they are inexpensive, easy to launder, fast drying, and come out pillow-soft from the my brother-in-law’s dryer when it’s too rainy to line dry.

Here’s my newborn cloth diaper stash.

The breakdown:

  • 30 cotton prefold diapers *You can get by on less if you’ve got a dryer.
  • 2 all-in-ones
  • 2 fitted diapers
  • 6 newborn sized covers
  • 2 dozen homemade flannel wipes

Wanna know my faves? Stay tuned!

I made the exact opposite mistake, I got the regular size for my newborn and then I backtracked to disposables till he got big enough! Maybe Infant size would be the better option next time around!!!

Haha. Isn’t it funny what we learn with the first child? You know, my son is now almost 7 months old and still fitting into the infant sized prefolds quite well. I’d definitely give it a try with your next one. The money savings makes it worthwhile!

Have you tried flats with a newborn? Baby isn’t here yet but have tested the origami fold on a doll that fits preemie clothes; it doesn’t seem too bulky but I’m not sure how bulky they would be on an actual baby. Just curious if you have an opinion on them. I plan to use flats after baby outgrows newborn diapers anyway, and was hoping I could get away with flats instead of little prefolds for the first few months.

Sasha, the short answer is no, I’ve never used flats at all. I think you’re definitely on to something though. I’d bet that flats would be great on a newborn, but you’ll have to come back here and fill me in if you go for it!

No, not at all. I am currently using the larger sized prefolds with my week-old daughter and they fit just fine under Thirsties’ smallest size nb covers and Bummi’s newborn whisper wraps and a handful of WAHM made covers too. Not a problem!
