Soda Cracker Painting

February 19, 2016 By Jelli 24 Comments

Make your kids’ snack time more colorful with edible paint! You only need three items to make this yummy soda cracker painting project a hit in your own home.

My older kids, 4 and 2, were anxious to get their “activity” on, and had been begging to paint for a few days. After seeing this milk color swirling activity on Pinterest, it got my creative juices flowing to make a whole event out of painting with food colors.

We started out with the rainbow milk science activity, which held their attention for about 10 minutes and then moved on to the main event, soda cracker painting with edible paint!

Ingredients for making edible paint:

  • food colors (gel or liquid)
  • honey

Materials you’ll need for soda cracker painting:

  • small plate
  • small bowl or ramekin
  • edible paint recipe (see below)
  • popsicle sticks (for small hands)
  • toothpicks (for older children)
  • soda crackers
  • kid-sized aprons or bibs

How to set up your soda cracker painting activity:

Protect your kids’ clothing by tying on an apron or shirt-like bib. (Love these bibs for the younger ones!) Place all materials on the table and talk to your children about colors. Allow them to choose their favorite color for the painting.snack activity for kids-2

Add a tablespoon of honey to your child’s bowl and a tiny bit of food coloring. Give the tot a popsicle stick to stir up their edible paint. Set their soda crackers out on a plate in front of each child and allow them to paint and experiment making designs on their crackers before eating them. If your kids are like mine, they’ll be “painting” their lips too!edible paint

NOTE: This edible paint works great for finger painting too! For babies and tub time play, check out our favorite recipe for baby-safe edible paint.

Yep, this honey paint is a great way to lengthen snack time, especially if you have a couple of chores to do while they sit ’round the table! (Gotta love high chairs and the fact that your kid can’t escape!) Thanks so much for popping by, Chelsea. It’s a pleasure to hear from you.

Thanks, Alli! I was surprisingly delighted to see that my little people didn’t even manage to make much of a mess with this honey paint since it doesn’t splash or spill easily. Win win! Thank you for taking a moment to stop by today.

This looks like such a fun idea. I never did try food coloring with my daughter when she was little, although she definitely loved painting, LOL!

This looks like a blast! I played with my food so much as a kid that I usually ended up making art out of more than I ended up eating. I would have loved an activity like this!

Cute idea! I never thought about using honey, I’ve used yogurt in the past. I would do this everyday, if it wasn’t for the clean up!

Yep, we’ve done yogurt paint too, especially when my kids were smaller. In my experience, honey is easier to clean up because they can’t spill it and make a mess. It runs soooo slowly.

This sounds like a great idea. Plus, it can double as their afternoon snack. I’ll have to let my 4 year old do this.

Yep, my kids are into painting right now, that’s for sure. I’m still trying to convince my youngest that dot markers are like paint because it’s just so convenient!

I used to teach preschool. I can tell all kids would have a blast doing this. But this is great for preschool teachers.
